In the International Conference on University-Community Engagement “Collaborative Creations Leads to Sustainable Change” held at Surabaya, Indonesia during 2-5 August 2016, the session on engaged university on the morning of 4th August had an external perspective from a partnering civil society organisation. Ms Nani Zulminarni, Director of PEKKA (Pemberdayaan Perempuan Kepala Keluarga), described her experiences of partnering with universities in Indonesia. Her reflections indicated that students came for field work with fixed theoretical notions of community and local actors felt disappointed when their ways of living and practical experiences were ignored and dismissed. She would like engaged university to support collective knowledge and action to bridge the gap between policy and practice. Documenting local stories and widely disseminating them can support such possibilities."
