Certificate in Research for Citizen-led Change
Whose knowledge counts in development, and how can leaders gather and mobilize knowledge for change? What does it mean for research to be community-based and participatory? What is the difference between evaluation and other kinds of research? When are quantitative and qualitative methods useful and appropriate? What challenges are encountered with multiple stakeholders? This course will help you make choices about the appropriate ways to do research for citizen action. You will learn about different types of research and how they can contribute to citizen capacity to make and shape decisions, how indigenous research practice, research quality, and the ethical responsibilities of collaborating with local communities will help build new knowledge.
Drawing upon the experience of facilitators and participants, the course offers a collaborative and interactive approach to learning. Research methods will be introduced, with some research skills covered in depth, but the emphasis is on skillbuilding for making decisions about appropriate research strategies. Case study examples of research for citizen action will be integral to the course.

This program is designed for experienced development practitioners who are interested in developing a critical awareness of research practice in order to inform decisions about applied research design and practice for citizen-led development

Program costs are quoted in Canadian dollars and are subject to revision.
Scholarships
Applicants from developing countries are eligible for Coady Institute scholarships and bursaries that cover most of the cost of tuition, room and board. This support is the result of generous funding from the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development and a number of individual and institutional donors. Special efforts are made to enable women and Canadian aboriginal peoples to attend. Coady Institute is not able to support the cost of travel.
