Purpose

Dr. Rajesh Tandon and Budd L Hall, the UNESCO Co-Chairs in Community Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education, invite you to join members of the Next Generation research project for a discussion of its findings study on training in Community-based Research (CBR) around the world.

Our research program in the UNESCO Chair in CBR-SR has evolved over the past three years. We have worked with many global and regional partners in identifying issues of policy development and advocacy for the vision of knowledge democracy, community-university research partnerships, the role of civil society in knowledge creation, and in the theory and practice of the co-construction of knowledge. Our research has shown us that there is a strong demand for CBR training in a variety of thematic areas, but there are also major obstacles for providing training opportunities and finding places to learn participatory research methodologies. 

The International Symposium on Challenges in the Training of Community-based Research will allow for presentations on innovative approaches for developing capacities in participatory research and the sharing of ideas about strategies for building a global partnership for training practitioners and researchers at both university and community levels in the field of community based research. The Symposium is part of a two-day event (September 15th and 16th) which will also include planning for an International Consortium for Training in the field of Community Based Research. The meeting on Sept. 16th aims to assess the capacities, interests and potential roles of our four thematic partners (PRIA, Coady Institute, IRES, ISICUE) and regional partners (Gulu University-Uganda, Islamic University-Indonesia, COEP-Brazil, and others) in the International Consortium. We intend to discuss the main architecture of the Consortium, including but not limited to: its organizational design, governance structure, institutional roles, membership and potential clients.
